eyewitness news is seconds away . good morning. welcome to "wjz eyewitness news" this sunday. >> changes occurring whether wise. it was another hot one yesterday. we got up to 91 degrees. but we're not going there today. there is some rain out there the southwest and it is moving in our direction. what we've seen already is over the areas of dc and an accomplice. but not much has made to the ground yet. but a couple showers are possible this morning. and look at the temperatures this morning. it is still very warm around the entire region. but compared to today as yesterday is that these are not going up all that much. 66 in baltimore right now.

67 in dc. you see lots of 60s across the region. and this afternoon, we're going up probably to the low 70s. on and off chances for showers the first part of today. tonight the rain picks up and we'll have the forecast coming up. first, here's what people are talking b the battle over slots continues to heat up. and now add voluntary cates from both sides are taking fight to the voters' front door. wjz has the latest. >> reporter: people that are against the slots at the mall are out in force this morning. this is the owner of a multi- billion dollar business. he and his wife are knocking on the doors of perfect straining ger -- perfect strangers to get them to vote for proposition a.

he has state approval to build a slot parlor at an anne arundel county mall. >> i think we'll win and we'll keep on fighting. the state of maryland location said this is the ideal location. >> reporter: another group that includes homeowners is adamantly opposed and trying to convince people to vote no. >> we're handing out fliers and putting up signs this week. >> reporter: the group called against slots at the mall is getting big financing from penn national. why? because if slots are voted down at anne arundel county, they may get to build their on slot parlor at a nearby track. >> the only way we could get our voice out is to take the -- if both sides have money, now it comes back to the issue. >> reporter: the group don't want gambling near the mall. and they worry about traffic. and with one month before the

election, both sides are campaigning in full force. the cordish company said if it succeeds, it will provide 4,000 jobs. and giving the anne arundel county residents first dib. >> question a will be on the ballot on november 2nd. the man charges with murdering they're in they're in native love will have to wait for his trial. he is charged with killing the 22-year-old crockeysvilles woman inside her offcampus apartment at the university of virginia and the judge denied a media request to have cameras present in the courtroom. a partial guilty verdict for the drunk driver accused of killing another young athlete in maryland. they say that anthony gallow ran a red light and killed four

people, including los angeles anaheim pitcher. the jury is still trying reach a verdict on three murder charges in that case. on annapolis man is behind bars charged with attempted murder. the police say that charles wallace shot a man. the victim was able to escape and flagged down a passing officer. wallace was arrested a short time later no word on what sparked the violence. new questions regarding the death of natasha pettigrew. she was struck and killed while training for a triathlon in prince george's county. and the family wants to know why the driver has not been charged. >> reporter: dozens of people that loved natasha pettigrew gathered at the site where the 30-year-old was hit by her bike and later died, casting doubt on the driver's story. >> i thought i hit a deer.

>> i hit a squirrel one day. i cried. i knew i hit it and i stopped. >> reporter: natasha pettigrew was a maryland green party, candidate running for u.s. senate. >> i don't feel that our elected officials are responsive to the needs of constituents. >> reporter: she was on her mike christy littleford hit her. police said that christy littleford left they are on the side of the road and continued to drive home, thinking she thought an animal, when she found the bike under her, she called the police. and natasha pettigrew's family and friends want answers. >> the biggest question is did the driver knew she had someone or she really thought she hit a deer. >> the county's state attorney said that the investigation could say several weeks.

in montgomery county, the public will not get the final say on a controversial fee. the judge rejected thousands of petition signatures, including one that he called ineligible and others that left off a middle initial. critics say they plan to appeal. he received a life-saving transplant in the middle of last year's record breaking snowstorm. and michael jader is using his new lease on life to champion a cause that is close to his heart. >> reporter: the blizzard left this man on the ski scopes in maryland and this man was near death. jadeder got to the call to get to the hospital. a heart was found to match his heart. the neighbors dugs out his car so he could get to the hospital for what could be a life- changing operation. >> the fact they found my son

he did not have a heartbeat. but they were able to get his heart started again and donate to someone that desperately needed, i think that is amazing. >> reporter: david's mom finds herself on this hot september morning at the park for a fundraiser for the group that coordinates organ donation. >> it is a celebration of david's life. >> reporter: they'll walk 1k or run five. and here's michael jader, the man with david's heart in his chest. >> when i look at michael jadeder, i don't look at him with the man of david's heart. he is a friend. >> reporter: a friend happy with his own good fortune, sensitive to the situation that put him here. >> i can't give back to the davis family to you what they've given me. all i can do it give my friendship back and hopefully it will help her deal with the situation and her loss. >> people grief in different

ways. and my way of grieving is being involved. >> reporter: hundred people got -- 300 people got involved today all of them saying thank you to someone. >> when you're supposed to do thank you letters through you the organization, i can't understand how understand anybody can put down words to say thank you. >> reporter: they raced $48,000 today. you can become an organ donor when you get a maryland's driver's license. >> what a great story. whether wise, a lots of changes. it's been hot. we're sinking way down from where we were. and it's gotten really dry lately and that is going to change too. >> this is where we say come on, fall? >> pretty much. there is some rain on the doppler radar. you can see there's that rain and it is coming up from the

southwest. it looks a little worse than it is. we're going to see showers. but had some of that is not making it to the ground yet because it's so dry so tart out with. the clouds coming in from the south overnight and some rain that is following. so what else is going on in the winds have furnished around to the north. and this is going to keep down our temperatures. we got into the 90s yesterday afternoon. today we're starting out in the 60s, ooze and 40s further west. but we're not going up all that much this afternoon. so here's how we open it up this storm has a few different parts to. this section is going to drive the entire system. it's part of the storm that brought all the flooding to the midwest. and it's diving down to the south and moving our way. this is just the first round of what we're going to see. as we head into the next couple days, the center gets closer and the winds are really going to pick up. tomorrow really heavy rains expected around here.

as it slowly passes off to the north, it's going to tap into the atlantic, pulling the moisture n and we could see local played areas of flooding after this is through. then we're going to have to pay attention to the tropics because we're still watching matthew down in here. and there's a chance this could drift into the gulf that is a big question right now. so we'll keep an eye on that for you a way out in the atlantic, we still have lisa. it is backed down to a tropical storm call depression. back here at home, small craft advisory in effect for our waters with the winds turning around from the northeast. and the game time weather, if you're lucky enough to be headed done there today, there's a chance for a couple of showers. game time temperature around 73 degrees and taking on the browns this afternoon. forecast for the rest of us today, we're going up into the 70s. a few showers around and the rain starts to pick up tonight. and tomorrow is when we start

to see the heavier rain around here. and the temperatures stay in the 70s during this time. some mild air associated with it. and it gets out of here on wednesday. and we'll watch for another storm system as we head into the second part of the week. so overall, we've knocked done our temperatures considerably and we're bringing up the rain chances big time too. since we've had this gorgeous stretch of weather in september, we're gown two and a half inches -- we're down two and a half inches for our rainfall total so fall. a controversial building plan threatens to stall middle east peace talks. dozens of bikers hit the streets in honor of a baltimore county man. >> reporter: more than 3,000 people or here at johnny stadium for the great prostate challenge. we'll tell you about this

good morning. welcome back be to "wjz eyewitness news" sunday morning. and that is where the action is going to be in a couple hours. i'm sure there are people tailgating at this point getting ready for the game. and i'm sure a lot of you at homes are getting ready to head down there. what are we expecting today? you might want to get the rain gear ready. because we're seeing showers and a little rain coming up from the south. it is going to come in a couple different patches. the chance for a few showers as we head the next through hours. temperatures, we're in the 60s right now. you can see 58 in westminster, 56 in annapolis. only topping out in the mid-70s

this afternoon. back to some of the other stories that people are talking being this morning. a tense standoff in the west bank of palestinian protesters clash with israeli security forces. israeli police used tear gas at demonstrators after several began throwing rocks. israeli leaders said they'll start rebuilding after a moratorium at midnight tonight. and they say if that happens, they'll behind months long peace talks. medics rushed four people to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. it happened when a gunman opened fire at an offcampus party when he was not allowed inside. the shooter is still at large.

loved ones strapped on their helmets and on their bike in memory of a man yesterday. it was called larry's ride. he was avid bike racer and he was struck and killed. they held a big cookout affidavit ride. more than 27,000 men will die from prostate cancer. and people from the big prostate cancer challenge want that to change. >> reporter: more than 3300 people are here for the fourth annual the great prostate challenge where wjz is a sponsor. and governor o'malley is here and sandy sigel. >> good morning.

welcome back a little rain making its way n this is the binning of the storm system. forecast for the next five days. rain really begins to pick up tonight. and it may be till wednesday afternoon before it gets out much here and temperatures much lower. this is closer to our averages. ravens' fans are happy today because the purple birds are finally back in their nest. they open the 2010 season downtown this afternoon. >> players are excited to be

back on their home turf. good morning. this is a day that baltimore has long awaited, the first home game of the year. the browns are in town. the last time that the ravens played at home was before christmas last year. and since then, they've played six straight on the road, including a couple playoff games. they're happy to be back in baltimore for the home opener today. they will play in front a home crowd. and they expect the fans to make a difference. >> fans are more excited than anything. we have not been home for a while. i think that is huge for us. >> it will be loud. it's your home opener. they're going to be excited. they like it. they feet off a lot of energy. so it's one of those things that we need to watch out for. >> we're back home for the first time in quite a while. when they're on offense, we need it loud and especially loud when they see number 16 at

welcome back be to "wjz eyewitness news" sunday morning. i'm gigi barnette. >> so i made a big mistake. don't bring your umbrellas to the game. >> you can bring them to the orioles game. some stadiums you can be and some you can't so pack the poncho. >> so pack other rain gear. >> yeah. you see people already out there. they're lining up and they're getting ready. they have the barbeques cranking. this is the place to be today. we have showers on the doppler. it looks worse than it is because it's been so dry it will take some time to get going. the rain chances will pick up

later on today big time. as far as temperatures go, we're in the 60s and we're not going up all that much. that is the big difference. 66 in baltimore, 06 in westminster and 66 in columbia. this afternoon, only the low 70s. a chance couple of showers through the game time and the rain moves through tonight and it will be heavy at times. the fight over slots at an alleghney county mall heats up. advocates on bodily injury sides of the issue have started going around knocking on doors. and david cordish himself met with people stressing how it could bring thousands of jobs to anne arundel county. despite opposition, he's trying to remain upbeat. >> i think we'll win. but if we don't, we'll keep on fighting and we have our license. remember. the state of maryland location

commission said this is the ideal location. >> and several neighborhood groups say that slots at the mall would mean more traffic and more crime. and while the slots debate continues in anne arundel county, the state's first slot parlor is expected to open in cecil county. officials say if they get approval, they may opt doors a few days ahead planned of the grand oning on thursday. and switching gears a little. prescription drugs are quickly becoming a drug of choice for criminals that steal and sell them. this weekend, maryland was part of a nationwide effort to get them off the streets enace pose of them safely. >> reporter: over the years, helen acquired enough

prescription drugs to fill a small box and she was the caregiver of her point but now this weekend was the chance to get rid of it all. >> it gave me a chance to clean out my medicine cabinet. >> reporter: she is not alone. people arrived at the baltimore county police station in wood lawn to drop off old and unused prescription drugs. robert wanted to get rid of some medication but the hospital would not take it back. and the dea will take liquid medicine and pills. but syringes and needles are out. they have a no questions asked policy. >> we realize that the biggest source of the prescription drugs in the household is in the medicine cabinet. >> reporter: criminals steal prescription drugs anyway they can, especially if it leads to a profit. but the take back locks that.

>> you heard the term dumpster diving being whether in dumpsters or trash cans, they'll do it because they'll use it or take the pills and sell them on the street. >> reporter: and the police say that the main purpose of the take back to get as many prescription drugs off the streets, they say another reason for it is to keep the drugs out of the hands of young children. >> during a recent survey, a lot of teenagers said they get the prescription drugs at home in mom and dad's medicine cabinet. >> reporter: and now the drugs are headed to an incinerator. a shotout inside a crowded birthday party leaves one man dead in california. police say that a heated fight inside the party ended after several people pulled out guns and knives. eight people shot and one died. and another three people were stabbed. no arrests have made. it's been more than five

months since millions of gallons of crude first began pumping into the gulf. and now victims are being promised bigger and faster payment. they say that they're responding to critics is a that i sat payments have been too slow and too small. recent estimates say about 206 million gallons of crude spewed into the gulf. and flood conditions in the midwest are starting to improvement but the damage is already done. >> they say we can't get in yet to look at our place to see what is left. >> half of our stuff is gone. there's so much stuff in there wrecked and lost. >> heavy rain triggered heavy flooding in parts of minnesota and wisconsin last week. officials say that the water is receding but it is leaving

behind a path of destruction. the hit show undercover boss starts a new season tonight. one maryland boss went undercover and now big changes are coming to his company because of it. >> reporter: cleaning pools in the florida heat draws a sweat. that is where this ceo has not done in years. but as an undercover boss, he pulls it off. for the last two years, joyce has headed choice hotels. but during the show he becomes the janitor and a new member of the sales team. once he almost blew his cover after making a cold call to a customer. >> and i were surprised how poorly i did this? of the jobs.

for this one. they're ready for it if you're headed to the game -- there we go. we got the purple bird out. this is what we're dealing with weather-wise. floss rain already making its way into the states. and we're going to see on and off showers through the first half of today. but then the rain really picks up tonight. we'll switch it over. and the clouds started to come in overnight. they've really thickened up in a lost case. and this first round of vain really starting to fizzle now the some case. the air has been so dry on top of us. but the other thing it's turning our winds around to the northeast and that will keep us cool right now. 66 in baltimore, 58 in hagerstown. take a look. the dew points are still in the low 50s that is a little higher than it has been but it's

really far from the temperature. when these are further apart, the rain starts to evaporate. then tonight the rain will begin in full force and tomorrow into tuesday, we're going to see rounds of heavy rains from the storm system coming our way. it's part of the same one that made its way through the midwest. it's dipping down to the south and moving nothing the mid- alantic. as that center passes monday and tuesday, it will tap into more moisture. and west potential for localized flooding out of this w there's a lot of moisture with t in the tropics, we have matthew going on in the south wet. it is drifting off to the north. lisa is still way out there back down to a tropical depression. we're going to keep an eye in the southern parts of the

united states here because weather is forming something in the next couple of days could affect the united states. and keel keep an eye on na. -- and we'll keep an eye on that. game time weather, that is what we expects. 73 degrees for its game time temperature. mostly cloudy skies. and the chance for a couple of showers. and a few of the showers today. but tonight move a ran out there. and then over the next five days. the rain can be heavy at times monday and tuesday. we're in the 70s during that time so not the 90s. but believe it or not these are closer to our averages. we've been lulled into the sense of it being warm lately. now we're back to the full week of fall weather. what do you get a couple that you want to say -- let's try enthusiasm again. take two. what do you get when you have a

it's 8:45. the great prostate cancer challenge back and organizers are determined to bring down cancer rates. >> wjz heads back out to towson university and i saw a special guest hanging around with you there. is that mr. marty bass? >> reporter: he was here. he is the mc of the event. he's going to do other things right now. but he is the mc because we're a proud sponsor and part of our community commitment of this great prostate challenge. and we have a few other special guests with us rights now. all the reasoners have taken to

the streets and they should be finishing up shortly. we have not had our first one cross the finish line yet. but this is the forth annual great prostate challenge. more than 3,000 runners is out here. it's an important issue. nearly a quarter million men will be diagnosed this year with prostate cancer. and somebody who has been a great supporter of this issue is our congressman. you've been here every year. >> yes and it grows every year. i think they got 3500 people this year. and that shows that the awareness is going up every year. >> reporter: how does it make you feel to see people come together for such an event and maker somewhere such a lead near research? >> there's a common purpose like this in terms of addressing a disease like cancer, and in this case prostate cancer, it brings the community together. and i got to give sandy segal

credit for this. he has great enthusiasm. and when it comes to research on these diseases, attention equals funding. the more you race awareness, the more you'll get the research dollars to flow there. >> reporter: somebody who has benefit from the research is len my moore with us right here live. he has a cancer survivor and a famous baltimorean. good morning. and how are you donning? >> thank god, we're haining in there. >> reporter: and it's because you actually went and got screened? >> that's exactly right. you have to. men are scared. i was scared till i found out, you got to do something because of the blood test and the good screening that showed that there was something going on.
